DAN RHODES: un outsider nel panorama letterario britannico

Dan Rhodes è un grande fan degli Smiths e di Morrissey al punto da influenzarne la scrittura… e questo mi ha fatta sorridere e pensare a Raymond, il piccolo protagonista del libro di Willy Russell. La combinazione di gioia e malinconia, pessimismo e ironia che emerge dalle sue storie ne è certamente il lascito più evidente. 

Come per Raymond, l’influsso di Morrissey si traduce in una personalità complessa e poco incline alla felicità. Le sue storie, i suoi personaggi, sono spesso malinconici e difficilmente trovano soddisfazione in amore: in particolare le prime opere sono incentrate proprio su questo, con un ironico pessimismo di fondo. 

Successivamente ha applicato questo atteggiamento al mondo dell’editoria, con particolare riferimento al rapporto tra scrittori o artisti e l’establishment. Le ultime opere infatti polemizzano in questo senso, al punto da renderlo  un autore scomodo, un outsider che ogni tanto dichiara il suo ritiro dal mondo degli scrittori e continua a fare lavori di vario genere, senza però rinunciare a pubblicare.

DAN RHODES: AN OUTSIDER IN THE BRITISH LITERARY SCENE

Dan Rhodes is a great fan of the Smiths and of Morrissey to the point of being deeply influenced in his writings… and that made me smile and think of Raymond, the young protagonist of Willy Russell’s book. The combination of joy and melancholy, pessimism and irony in his stories is the most obvious legacy.

As for Raymond, Morrissey’s influence results in a complex personality, not very inclined to happiness.

His stories, his characters are often melancholic and hardly find satisfaction in love: in particular, his first works focus on this topic, with an ironic underlying pessimism. 

He later applied this attitude to the publishing world, with particular reference to the relationship between writers or artists and the establishment. His latest books polemicize over the book industry to the point of making him an inconvenient author, an outsider that every now and then announces his retirement from the world of writers and finds employment in jobs of various kinds but then, luckily, he does not stop publishing.
